Peter and Jennifer Diepstraten
Corporate Vision, Direction, and Execution
Jennifer has been on a twenty-year journey to understand how relationships and communication influences what people do. Her journey includes graduating with Honors in Biopsychology from Vassar College and a Masters’ of Science degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine and 12 years in high-dollar corporate sales, where she was often asked to train colleagues on how to have conversations that could rekindle stalled negotiations. She was frequently called on to resolve break-downs in communication with customers, and to give trainings to colleagues on creating honest and productive relationships with customers for one of the top optical equipment manufacturers in the world. Her passion is coaching and mentoring people whose relationships didn’t turn out quite the way they thought they would to create amazing relationships anyway, which she has been doing formally for 3 years.
Peter was a General Contractor in construction for over 23 years, building a business based on great relationships in which he took the mystery and fear out of home remodeling. His ability to inspire confidence and deliver results made him the contractor of choice for home owners and developers alike. He lead construction crews that generated over $50 million in condominium conversions. However, Peter’s favorite success has been actually learning from his first two marriages – what not to do, how to recover, and how to create relationships that actually work. Peter has been a leader for a renowned personal development and transformation company for 6 years.
Jennifer and Peter also have sons age 12, 3, and infant, a 29-year old daughter, 8-year old granddaughter and 2-year old grandson.
The Peter and Jennifer Story (Jennifer’s version): We met in 2009 and within a few months of meeting, Peter and I had finished “interviewing” each other. We had been through enough successful and unsuccessful relationships to be crystal clear about what we wanted in a life partner and so we really laid all our cards on the table. We were both ready to have more children and build a family. But more than that, we wanted to be partners in all aspects of life and enjoy the journey of our lives together.
In the third month of our relationship, Peter said to me, “Who do you want our relationship to be for the rest of the world? In other words, what do you want our relationship to represent?” I stared at him, dumbfounded, as this question had never occurred to me before. I knew what my purpose was, and what I wanted to contribute, but I had never thought about what I wanted a partnership to represent. Then I thought, “Of course the partner I’ve dreamed of would want to create something for us to live for together!”
After a few minutes, I said, “Let’s be the couple that represents what is possible for relationships – that it really is possible to be connected, committed, and fulfilled for a lifetime.”
From there, we created Empowering Partnership. Empowering Partnership is the possibility we look to as our ideal – a measuring stick – to see if what we do for each other, for our families, and for other people is giving them the support, encouragement, and tools to get what they want. Later, that ideal evolved into what we now call our North Star.
